Ferroalloy drying units



The following ferroalloys are used as alloying additions in steelmaking: ferrosilicon, ferrovanadium, ferromolybdenum, metallic manganese, ferrochrome, ferrotitanium, ferrochrome silicon, ferromanganese, silicomanganese and others depending on the assortment of smelted steel grades.

Before feeding into the teeming ladle or charging directly in the EAF ferroalloys with humidity of more than 1% or stored in open air for more than 2 days should be dried.

The Jet Technologies Concern designs and supplies ferroalloy drying units based on a rotary dryer with heat generator and systems of gas cleaning and aspiration.

Initial wet ferroalloys can be transported to the unit’s receiving hopper by a conveyor, or carried by an overhead crane in self-discharging containers. From the receiving hopper the ferroalloys enter the rotary dryer by means of an automatic dispenser.

The unit’s rotary dryer represents a metal tube with internal lifters. The dryer’s body is wear-resistant with heavy-duty reinforcement. During rotation of the dryer the internal lifters of various types provide extended surface contact of ferroalloys with the flow of hot gases, their rapid heating and drying.

The rotary dryer is heated by gas or liquid fuel burned in the heat-generator’s combustion chamber. Fuel is supplied by a modular gas-control unit (for gas) or a preparation and thermostating system (for liquid fuels).

Ferroalloys are continuously discharged from the rotary dryer on the conveyor belt, to the transfer hopper or changeable self-discharging containers.

A bag filter is used to clean the exhaust gases and aspiration air. The concentration of ferroalloy dust in the unit emissions does not exceed 10 mg/m3. The gas cleaning system applies the equipment, materials and methods ensuring fire and explosion safety, and allowing to work with ferroalloys, whose dust is pyrophoric and toxic.

Charging and discharging of materials and maintaining the assigned operating parameters of the dryer, i.e. the burner air/gas ratio, dilution of combustion products of the required temperature, adjustment of the burner’s capacity during changes in operation of the dryer are carried out automatically. The unit permits to quickly change the parameters of the drying process and to assign individual programs of drying for each type of ferroalloy.
